Jon has hosted us before when we visited the Warm Springs Frontrunner maintenance facility, and we look forward to hearing from him again.

The Frontrunner project was the winner of last year's (2013) W.W. Hay Award for Excellence in Railway Engineering. One of the most impressive parts of the project was no lost-time accidents occurred during the entire construction of the line.
So here's the important information, once again:
BYU AREMA was proud to have been able to send four students to the annual AREMA conference, held this year in Chicago. Seth Hinckley, Travis Meservy, Ryan Moore, and Aaron Cook all represented us well throughout the conference. Our quiz bowl team took second place, losing only to UIUC. The members of our quiz bowl team were Seth, Travis, and Aaron.

Some other highlights of the conference included the "Meet the Next Generation" event, where there were almost as many recruiters as student members (let's emphasize again that the railway industry needs new talent -- and it's growing!), meeting BYU alumni out working in the industry, and getting to see a little bit of Chicago. The exposition, with all of the vendors, was also a great spot where we all were able to ask some questions and get great answers about some of the more detailed nuances of the industry.
We all were very grateful for some generous support from the industry so that we could all go this year. A big thank you for Travis and Ryan for these photos too!

For those of you looking to join BYU AREMA, we'd love to have you along next year to Minneapolis, and we have some great events coming up, including a speaker on November 20th.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10036378159482210748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-753258409914147915.post-25310357396442180122014-03-12T09:59:00.000-07:002014-03-12T09:59:46.554-07:00Annual Conference is in Chicago this year - Sept. 28 - Oct 1. We do have some funds that we can use to subsidize the trip, but part of that comes from the College or University, and that depends on how many are going.
This will let us do some initial planning and everything before the semester ends and get the forms we need for BYU travel all together.
Hope to see you there!Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10036378159482210748noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-753258409914147915.post-84479917781505927362014-01-20T10:59:00.000-08:002014-01-20T10:59:03.908-08:00Welcome to BYU AREMA and "How to Join"Please check out our "About" page above. We are currently working on getting a website up which has more information, but for now we're working on getting the organization off the ground. This means if you are a BYU Student with an interest in Railway Engineering and Websites, we have a spot for you!

In the mean time, here is a guideline of how to join our Student Chapter of the American Railway Engineering and Maintenance-of-Way Association at BYU:

Step 0) Be a BYU Student. Sorry if you are not, but check out AREMA's Homepage or their student chapter list to see if you are going to a school with a student chapter right now. If not, transfer to one that has a student chapter and be sure to thank whoever is running it, or if you want to start a student chapter of AREMA at your school, you'll need to find a faculty adviser and contact the national organization (again, their website is arema.org). We can't really help you beyond that, because this is the Student Chapter of AREMA at BYU, and we do not speak for the national organization. They're really helpful and were very kind through our founding process, so don't be afraid to go contact them!

Step 1) Email byuarema@gmail.com and let us know you want to know about our activities, which gets you on our activities e-mail list (simple, right?). Make sure you will get e-mails from us, so don't spam filter us out. We usually send no more than three e-mails per activity (month before, week before, and day before announcement). We aim for one activity per month, but we apologize if it creeps up to four or five e-mails if we make a mistake or plans have to change.

2) Go to clubs.byu.edu and click on "Find a Club" under the "Start Here" button. Search for
BYU AREMA by name (it should have only one result). Click on that result and then
click "Join Organization." It'll ask you to login using your RouteY ID
and password, and then you submit a request to join as a member. Also,
this system does not automatically migrate your e-mail over, so click on
"My Profile" at the top of the page and make sure you have at least a
primary e-mail address on your profile. Once you have that e-mail
address and the request sent to byuarema@gmail.com, you will be well on your way to becoming a member. (If you do not add your email address to that website, it glitches and won't show your name in the roster, just a blank slot where a name usually goes).

3) Join the national organization (arema.org),
which is where all the networking can happen and how you get all the
benefits listed in the application on the second page. Fill out
the Student Chapter Member Application, and either bring it to our January activity, where we have a membership drive, or send it in on your own to the address listed. Be
sure to attach your class schedule to the application, it is the national organization's way
of verifying you are a student. Your first calendar year's membership is free, and $20/year after that.

Make sure you get emails from byuarema@gmail.com, because we send almost all announcements out this way.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10036378159482210748noreply@blogger.com0
